Framing
A system can preserve the appearance of choice while removing the conditions that make choice meaningful. Defaults decide before the user arrives. Recommendations narrow the field before comparison begins. Automation turns judgement into acceptance. Personalisation can feel helpful while quietly reducing the user's room to manoeuvre. This is how agency usually erodes: not through force, but through convenience. The person is still present. They can still click, approve, continue, accept. But the work of seeing, comparing, questioning, and refusing has been thinned out by the system around them. The choice remains visible after the judgement has been designed away. Designing for agency means keeping consequential parts of the system visible and contestable. It means showing why something is being suggested, making alternatives reachable, and treating refusal as a legitimate action rather than an edge case. Agency is not freedom from influence. It is the ability to act while still understanding the forces acting on you.
